1) They save lives. They find things doctors miss, or find things during tech appointments that are a concern. I had a cat come in for a nail trim, and the cat had a small growth on the toe the technician noticed and pointed out. Turns out it was a squamous cell carcinoma. The toe had to be amputated, but the cat was cured and went on to live for several more years. That technician saved the cat's life. If you see something, say something!
2) They treat the pets with compassion and provide extra TLC to those sick or recovering surgery patients in the hospital. Those kisses and hugs aren't in the job description, but they are routinely given out to our patients.
3) They work overtime. I have never been at a practice where the techs didn't sometimes miss their lunch breaks or get stuck at work late. No one likes to do that, but vet techs are always willing to go the extra mile to help those pets in need when we have a crazy day. Thanks for that!
4) They do a million different things all at once. Setting up an appointment, running a fecal, drawing blood, taking an x-ray, grabbing that phone when the receptionists can't get to it...you get the picture. They are amazing multi-taskers.
5) They provide a listening ear. Working with clients or the general public can be a difficult task, especially when a pet is sick or emotions are running high. Vet techs often lend a sympathetic ear to those clients who need someone to talk to. Clients love to tell stories and as veterinary professionals hear a lot of them! They also know many clients by name and make the effort to make the client feel special. This customer service is truly amazing and valuable to a practice.
