Most states use the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE®) as an entry test for credentialing veterinary technicians. Before beginning your career as a vet tech, you will probably need to take (and pass!) this exam.
The next VTNE® testing window is from November 15th - December 15th, 2019. If you want to take the test during that time, you will need to submit an application during the August 15th - October 15th registration window.
NOTE: Your registration is only valid for a specific testing window and cannot be transferred. Don’t register unless you are sure you will be able to take the exam during that window!
❐ ASAP: Research the requirements to take the VTNE® in your state.
Eligibility requirements vary between states, so research the requirements for all states in which you wish to become credentialed.
❐ ASAP: Read the VTNE® Candidate Handbook.
This handbook will help you understand all policies related to the test, including registration requirements, test fees, what to expect at the test center, etc. Take the time to review this now, so that you can be prepared and plan accordingly.
❐ August 15th - October 15th: Apply online to take the VTNE®.
Don’t wait until the last minute! Go to the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) website to create an online account and pay the $325 application fee. Register online using the first and last name that exactly matches your driver’s license or other identification. If you require special testing accommodations, you will be asked to submit additional documentation.
❐ Before October 15th: Have your final transcript sent to AAVSB.
Your transcript must be sent directly from your vet tech school (or a contracted service used by the school) and can be submitted by mail or email. Your transcript must be RECEIVED by October 15th or you will lose your $325 exam fee!
❐ Upon receiving your eligibility email from AAVSB: Schedule your exam.
Approximately 2-3 weeks after submitting your application and transcripts, you will receive an email inviting you to register for the VTNE®. This email will explain how to register (online or by phone) for a specific test date, time, and testing center. Register early, to ensure that you get the date/time/location that works for your schedule! If you haven’t received your eligibility email by October 31st, contact the AAVSB.
❐ Every day until Test Day: STUDY!
The AAVSB has resources available to help with studying, but many students find it helpful to use a service like VetTechPrep when studying for such an important test. VetTechPrep contains a combination of study resources (for review) and practice tests (to promote active learning), as well as 2-month and 3-month study plans to help you organize your studying and stay on track.
❐ Test Day: Stay calm!
Wake up early and eat a good breakfast. Plan to leave your home early, allowing plenty of time to deal with traffic or other delays. Take your driver’s license (or other identification) and registration confirmation email. Be sure to arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. Take a few deep breaths, relax, and do your best to remain confident that your preparation will pay off and you will conquer this exam!
