I hate to link such a sad post but I have been following the crisis in Venezuela for a while. It is not just this zoo, but many shelters and animal sanctuaries that are suffering. People cannot feed themselves and thus pets are given away or let go, and I think there are many people that may be unaware of the severe crisis going on there. 
"When a nation is plagued by hard times, people aren’t the only ones to suffer. About 50 animals at Venezuela’s Caricuao Zoo have starved in the last six months due to the rising cost of food, caused by the nation’s economic downturn.
Rabbits, tapirs, porcupines, pigs, and birds are among the fallen at the country’s northern zoo. Some went without food for two weeks."

The sad part is that the humans are also starving due to these incredible food shortages in their country. This is an extremely dire situation for all parties involved.
