"Cody the Pomeranian got out of the house when he was one year old. Recently, a Good Samaritan brought Cody in to MADACC. His microchip had been scanned upon arrival and then they contacted his owner." This is after 12 years!

Dr. Hehn's Take

Microchips are great...when we properly utilize them. I think all of us can take a lesson from this story that all dogs should be scanned on their first visit to the vet. I wish there were a very easy way to enter microchip numbers into a database to verify owner information. There is a good chance this dog had been to the vet at some point in it's 12 years of life.  It is a happy reunion but sad that it had to occur so late in this dog's life.

Always scan new pets, strays, and also routinely check that chips are working properly in your current patients. Remind the owners to keep their information current. Too many times there is a found or stray dog that has a chip, but the information is not current and we are unable to reach an owner.
