Dr. Hunthausen gives 4 great points of helping to decide if an animal is a danger- Predictability, Potential to Cause Damage, Family Variables, and Overall Complexity of the Situation. We don't get a lot of behavior training in school. Being able to recognize and understand causes and triggers in aggressive dogs is the key to helping with their rehabilitation, if possible. The most important thing is safety. If a dog is unpredictable, he/she must be kept away from children. In cases that are severe I recommend a veterinary behaviorist trained in this field to do a home visit to decide if the case can be helped or not and the steps to take to properly train the dog in a stable environment.
