Have you been to any really great conferences lately? Or are you planning to go one in the next year? With so many conference options, it can be hard to pick which one to go to.
After attending AVMA for the first time this year, it’s definitely one I would want to attend again in the future and one that I would recommend you check out as well!
In case you’re wondering what it was like to attend the AVMA’s conference in Denver this year, a friend of mine described it perfectly. “It felt like being back in vet school,” she said.
Followed by “I am excited about learning, about going to lectures. I am happy to be socializing. And I was completely inspired by the keynote address by Shiza Shahid, (watch it here)” she told me.
Incredible Keynote speaker: Shiza Shahid, Founder of the Malala Fund. Her talk focuses on When Passion Meets Empowerment.

The most amazing thing? No teleprompter, folks (and no slides)...... #AVMA2018 pic.twitter.com/sIHoG1jqHf
I thought to myself, “clearly she meant this was a version of vet school without the exams, stress of labs and clinics and definitely without the fear of the NAVLE and if so, then I definitely agree that it was a lot like vet school.”
The conference offered so much more than CE (which of course is super important)- there was also a focus on well-being, on social events, on networking opportunities and there was a lot of exposure to new products and services and a special focus on passion, leadership and empowerment.
Even as an exhibitor, I could see the difference in people, too. People were passionate about veterinary medicine again. They didn’t look burned out, disappointed or frustrated as I’d seen so often during my time in vet school or working in vet hospitals.
They looked interested, engaged and most importantly, excited. Excited about the possibility of gaining knowledge, of meeting old friends and making new ones. Excited about the possibility of having that very real connection to other people in this very special profession of ours- bonded by the passion to serve people and their pets, to heal and to help.
Just had blood drawn to check my rabies titer. It’s been too long since my last one. Thanks #AVMA2018 for arranging this service for us. Quick & easy over lunchtime! pic.twitter.com/aWBsg6YGEm

And maybe some people walked away from the conference excited about being inspired and motivated to empower themselves and others both in our profession and outside of it. For all those reasons, AVMA is absolutely a conference that I enjoyed attending and hope you enjoy it should you choose to attend in the future!
