Last year, I wrote a blog about the heartbreaking euthanasia of a dog due to Rabies exposure when the vaccine was overdue.

The Compendium of Animal Rabies and Control has now finally updated the protocol that was just released on March 1, 2016 in JAVMA. In this protocol, animals with an overdue or outdated Rabies vaccine may receive a booster and be put on observation rather than 6 month quarantine. AVMA Journal Citation.

Rabies exposure is more common that you might think. There are still many annual cases of rabies exposure in pets and in humans, and spans across many species. It is important to stay up to date on these current requirements and state laws. If you are unsure of the law in your state regarding potential exposures, contact your state veterinarian for further information. Encourage owners to keep their pets up to date on their Rabies vaccination.
